Today we remember Lance Corporal Andrew Gordon Jones and Lieutenant Marcus Sean Case, who both killed in action while serving Australia in Afghanistan 15 years ago on this day, 30 May 2011.
Born in Melbourne in 1986, Andrew Jones enlisted in the Australian Army in 2004 and trained as a cook. He served with the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, before posting to the 9th Force Support Battalion. A loyal and dependable soldier, he deployed to East Timor in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2010. Andrew was killed by an Afghan National Army member.
Marcus Case was born in Melbourne in 1984 and enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2002. After service with the 5th/6th Royal Victorian Regiment and the 1st Commando Regiment, including a deployment to East Timor, he transferred to the Australian Regular Army and became an Army pilot. Posted to the 6th Aviation Regiment, he deployed to Afghanistan as a Heron Unmanned Aerial Vehicle operator.
Marcus was killed when the Chinook helicopter he was travelling in crashed.
Today we remember two Australians who answered the call to serve and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their nation.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Duncan Duke at 1:00 pm on Wednesday 3 June 2026 at the Montmorency Bowling Club.
Please note that Service Members are asked to wear medals.
Following the service, friends and comrades are invited to join Duncan's family at the Montmorency-Eltham RSL for refreshments.

A few days after Anzac Day, our History & Heritage group had the pleasure of welcoming around 20 Cubs and their leaders from the local Sea Scouts group for a special talk and memorabilia display.
Many of the Cubs had proudly taken part in our Anzac Day march, with some also representing their group during the wreath-laying service. Their visit the following Wednesday, provided an opportunity to learn more about the origins of the RSL and the important work Sub-Branches do in supporting returned and ex-service personnel.
The group explored our collection of memorabilia, including badges, medals, ration packs, headwear, and historical equipment. The Cubs were highly engaged throughout the session, asking thoughtful questions and showing great enthusiasm and respect for the stories behind the items on display.
Our History and Heritage team said it was wonderful to see such strong interest from the younger generation in understanding the history behind the memorabilia.
We welcome everyone visiting the club to take a look at our memorabilia on display.

Vale Duncan Duke
13 August 1945 – 24 May 2026
It is with deep sadness that we advise our members and the broader community of the passing of our former President and Life Member, Duncan Duke, overnight on 24 May 2026.
Duncan was a proud Vietnam veteran who served his nation with distinction and honour. Following his military service, he continued that commitment through many years of dedicated service to the Montmorency-Eltham RSL Sub-Branch, including as President, Life Member, and competing with our bowls team.
Duncan made a lasting contribution to our Sub-Branch and to the veteran community more broadly. He was deeply respected by those who served alongside him, those who worked with him, and the many members whose lives he influenced over the years.
On behalf of our Committee, staff, members, and wider community, we extend our sincere condolences to Duncan’s family, friends, and comrades at this difficult time. ... See MoreSee Less
